We got back from Labor Day weekend to find 3 new calves on the ground. Two heifers and a bull. We love fall calving. In the winter and early spring, it is cold and wet. Calve outside and risk losing one to weather, but calve inside, increase risk of sickness. And we are so busy that time of year. Fall calves just seem so much easier. Born outside on green grass. Perfect temperature. The only downside is the grass is going away and they will require extra nutrition, as will their mothers. But if you can manage that, it is the way to go. Three down and 14 more to go!
